What Is A Press Release?
Press Release is a piece of content that a company or individual releases to inform the members of the media about the company’s new activities or milestones.
In other words:
Press releases are also called news releases or media releases and are released by a company to inform the world about their new hires, developments, events, and product launches.
Should You Spend Time On Releasing Press Releases?
If you are a big monopoly like Google, Apple, SpaceX, Amazon where people are always publishing new content about you and your company without even bothering you then you shouldn’t have to worry about distributing your press release about your new product launch or event.
But if you are reading this article I guess you aren’t a big brand or company. So you have to spread the word out by yourself. You have to let people know about your new products, events, and programs.
Distributing press releases can get you the following benefits:
- Get Covered By News/Media sites and blogs
- Bring new eyeballs to your company and brand and drive traffic
- Get your brand or company on Google News
- Improve your Google rankings
- Get discovered by potential customers
- Get your brand reputation
- Boost your brand’s trust and credibility
Do Something Newsworthy
First of all, you have to come up with a fresh and newsworthy idea that other bloggers, news sites, and journalists will want to cover on their platforms. Something Newsworthy.
It might seem hard to come up with something that journalists and news sites will want to cover. But the truth is it’s not that complicated.
Your newsworthy idea can be as simple as hiring someone new to your team, releasing new research or study, launching a new product, releasing a new book, joining or resigning from a team or corporation, and even it could be your new blog post.
As you see, you don’t have to discover a new species of birds or create a new type of invention. As long as you are creating and publishing something new you are good to go.
With that in mind, here are a few types of newsworthy content that you can create.
Journalists and news sites are always looking for new industry researches to publish on their platforms.
According to the Marketing-Land survey, 39% of journalists, state that they want to be pitched content that contains “exclusive research”.
Here’s an example of the ABC News site:
New Product Launches
If you are launching a new product or service you can easily create and distribute a press release for your product launch. It can help you spread the word out.
For example, Here’s a press release about a new blockchain trading platform.
Create A Compelling Title
Once you have a newsworthy idea and opportunity now it’s time to create a compelling title for your press release. Your title is going to play a huge role in your press release strategy. If you do it right not only your press release can be published on different sites but also people want to share your content even more.
Let’s again take the example of the backlinko’s industry study and how they used their title to reach more success:
You can use numbers to grab the attention of readers, you can use power words or anything that makes your title stand out. But be authentic and don’t use clickbait titles. Here is an article from HubSpot that will explain how you can create amazing titles.
Write Your Press Release Lead
Lead is your press release opening paragraphs or your introduction paragraphs. It has so much potential that it can make or break your entire press release. Be very cautious and selective when choosing words for your lead. It is as important as your post title.
You have to optimize your post’s first paragraph or your first 3–5 sentences in a way so it could grab the attention and interest of journalists.
Start Writing Your Press Release Body
Now we have a newsworthy idea, a great title, and a lead. Now it’s time to start writing the body of the press release. And yes, it’s also very important that you should better optimize your body.
Write In The Third Person
When writing your press release body always remember to write in 3rd person. Don’t use the words, I, Me, We, and You.
Instead of writing:
“We are excited to announce our new product”
“XYZ company has launched their new product with lots of new features”
Make It Easily Skimmable
You should also optimize your press release for skimmers. It has to be easily skimmable.
Use States And Figures
Whenever it’s possible to add states and references to authority studies and sources, don’t waste the chance. Always try to add states in your press releases.
It’s optional. If you like to add any relevant quote in your press release, then it can improve your formatting and structure. But it’s up to you. You can skip it if you want.
Add some final touches to your press release.
- Videos, etc.
Add Your Contact And Personal Info
Once you have completed all the steps now you can add your contact information. If you want to add your personal information like your bio or a description of your company then it would be a positive sign for your press release.
Proofread And Rewrite
Finally, when you are done with your writing, it’s time to proofread your content and rewrite it if necessary. I would like to say that don’t start proofreading right after you finished your writing. Take your time (at least 1 hour) before proofreading and rewriting your content.
