How To Learn SEO?
According to a study by GlobalWebIndex, 81% of consumers rely on Search Engines to buy products or services. Almost every store, service provider, product manufacturer, and e-commerce business need to rank at the top of its competitors. That’s where SEO comes into play and that’s why SEO is such an important investment for any brand or business.
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is an important process of making a website visible to search engines and consumers as well. Learning about SEO requires practice. SEO is not a theory that you can learn by memorizing facts, it requires practice. Start your own blog, publish content on your blog, split test your SEO techniques, analyze which technique is working for you, learn, upgrade, and grow your SEO marketing. That’s my approach to learning SEO. Now let’s briefly discuss the fundamentals and essentials of SEO.
What Is SEO?
Word SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and refers to the act of creating and optimizing a website according to the best practices. In other words, when a person optimizes a blog or website to be seen on the results of a search engine’s search pages (SERP) is called SEO.
Basics of SEO
SEO is a broad topic, but for absolute basics, we can break SEO into the following basic fundamentals:
- Keywords/Keyword Research
- Content Optimization
- On-page SEO
- Off-page SEO
- Technical SEO
These were the 5 fundamentals of SEO. Each of them is highly important and consists of many other important tasks. By having a full understanding of these five fundamentals of SEO you can rank your blog posts or website easily. But understanding these fundamentals is up to you. Below you will find details about each of them. Learn, practice, and implement these practices on your sites.
How Do Search Engines Work?
Having a clear understanding of how search engines work can help us a lot to rank on them. The process starts as you publish an article on a search engine. Their bots/crawlers, sometimes called spider crawlers start to analyze your content. The second part of the search engine’s function is indexing. And finally, the ranking part completes the basic functionality of a search engine.
The crawling process is when bots of search engines start analyzing your site content. Mostly then check whether your content is completing the demands of the users. The content quality matters at the point.
Web crawlers are not just crawling your content, but often billions of content. Indexing is the process when they decide to add your content to their systems so next time when a user types a query they will show the results from their indexed resources. Make sure that you manually submit your site for indexing in the beginning.
Finally, the ranking part begins. After analyzing your content and deciding that it has what most users want the final step of a search engine is to rank the resources based on their quality and problem solutions. Search engines give your content rankings on the performance of your work.
Keywords And Keyword Research
Keyphrases or Keywords play a huge role in any successful SEO strategy. Keywords are the fundamental and most important foundations of a good SEO. Keywords are the words or phrases that a user types in a search section. You can decide for which keyword term you want to optimize your content.
For example, if you are writing about how dog food is changing over time. You might target dog food as your main keyword to rank for. But keywords can be long and short as well:
short-tail keywords consist normally of a few words (1-3, or sometimes 4-5). Like, Dog Food, Who Killed Thanos, Marvel Universe, etc.
Long-tail keywords usually consist of long or complete sentences or phrases. Like, How Higgs Boson Works, Healthy Dog Food For Winter, How Many Avengers Died In Endgame?
There are many ways to research and choose the perfect keyword to rank for. Also, there are multiple methods to create an outstanding keyword strategy. The most useful keyword research strategy that I have found is the most time-consuming. It is to learn the art of researching keywords through your own practice and experience. I spent my first 3 years of blogging, creating multiple blogs, but not getting any results just because I didn’t understand how to target the perfect keyword. But after 3 years of failure, I learned which keywords I should target to get at the top of the results.
Below is the basic method of keyword research. But over time you will find it easier for you to research keywords more precisely. 11 Keyword Research Tools To Help You Save Some Time.
How to do Keyword Research
The keyword researching starts by brainstorming a couple of ideas that you are going to write about. First, create a list of topics that you want to cover on your blog. For example, if your website is about Insurance, then your list of topics might be as; Car Insurance Companies, Home Insurance Plans, Cheap And Reliable Insurance Plans for Business, Insurance Marketing, Health Insurance For Kids, etc.
Once you have a list of topics that you wanna cover on your blog. Now, you should start your keyword research. Let’s take Car Insurance Companies for instance. Your best practice would be to search about this topic on Google to find similar keywords and terms that people are using.
Now check what people are also searching about this topic, and find the best term that resonates with your topic and your blog.
Your next step would be to check the keyword data using some free tools.

But don’t go for the high competition, high CPC, or high traffic keywords from the beginning. As a beginner, always try to rank for the keywords that aren’t too competitive and aren’t too high in CPC or traffic. Because those keywords are really hard to rank for and as a new blog or website you don’t have the authority to compete with other big sites.
Keyword research is a broad topic and you can learn it deeply online and by experience. Here is an in-depth article about keyword research from Brain Dean. Read this to learn more techniques of keyword researching.
Once you have your keywords now is the time to start creating content on the topic and optimize it for SEO. When you are writing your content you must take care of the optimization. The content optimization begins with your title. Your title is the heartbeat of your content. Most people will only read your title and leave. You must learn how can you optimize your title for SEO and make it attention-grabbing. Your keyword must be included in your title as well.
After the title, your first paragraph plays a huge role in your optimization. Things like your LSI keywords, your headings, sub-headings, paragraphs, meta tags, tags, focus keyword optimization, etc will make your content a masterpiece.
Tools like the Yoast SEO plugin and Rankmath help you optimize your content for SEO. You can check this article to learn more about optimizing your content.
On-page optimization is very crucial and helps a lot to get higher rankings. Even search engines like Google thinks On-page optimization is important for quality. It helps improve your content quality and readability.
Headings are going to play a huge role in the success of your On-page optimization. The most important and attention-grabbing text in your content is Heading.
H1s are the biggest size you can use in your text. Put your most important stuff and keywords in your H1.
H2s are also important ones. Make sure that your content has at least 2-3 H2 headings. Add your keywords in your H2 headings as well.
H3s are also important, but not much necessary. Don’t push hard to add H3s in your content, but it’s a positive thing if you have some H3 headings in your content.
Keep in mind to add H2 headings after the H1 and use H3 within H2s.
Internal And External Links
Links in your content are powerful which can give your points strength. Your content must have two types of links:
- Internal Links
Links to your other pages, posts, etc.
- External Links
Links to other online resources and websites.
Other Useful Ways To Improve On-page SEO
- Use Your Keyword In The First 100 Words
- Optimize Your URL For SEO
- Write Keyword-Rich Meta Description For Your Posts
- Add Emotion To Your Title
- Add Numbers In Your Title
- Use Visuals (Graphs, Images, Tables, Videos, etc)
The term off-page SEO is also one of the important SEO practices. Off-page SEO mostly starts after publishing your content. On-page SEO improves your site and content quality, off-page SEO improves your authority and trustworthiness. Google uses off-page SEO as a signal to your site’s authority, which means, the best off-page SEO is equal to higher authority and rankings.
Backlinks are considered one of the most important ranking factors in off-page SEO. Search engines use backlinks as an indication that your voice has the power to be heard. And once you get backlinks from authoritative sites your rankings will go up automatically. There are two types of backlinks:
- Follow Backlinks
Follow backlinks are links that allow search engine crawlers to further follow the link
- No-follow Backlinks.
No-follow backlinks are still counted backlinks, but they don’t allow search engine crawlers to follow links and are less important than Follow links.
Neutral links are created without the interference of the site owner. For example, if someone linked your blog post and adds a link to it on his site then this link is a neutral link.
Manually links are those links when you request an influencer to share your link on his website, or a customer shares the link on his site.
As the name suggests, self-created links are the ones that you personally created. This includes practices like comment signatures, backlink directories, press releases, profile links, etc.
Other Off-page SEO Practices That Help
- Content Marketing
- Press Releases
- Social Media Marketing And Sharing
- Forum Marketing
- Guest Blogging
- Content Syndication
Technical SEO is the part where you optimize and manage all the technical practices of your website, such as WordPress settings, theme settings, search engine visibility, redirects, indexing, crawling, website architecture, etc.
The Important Things To Keep In Mind
- Create a flat and easy to use site structure
- Keep a specific URL structure for your posts and pages
